This weekend = good! <33

So, I had a really great weekend. I kept busy pretty much non-stop, which made the weekend feel simultaneously very long and all too short.

Friday: After leaving work 20 minutes early only to get home about ten minutes later than I typically do, we went out to the Wrentham Outlets to find Nate a special suit! We found it. :) It's beautiful. I have, however, discovered that I am particularly fond of lighter colored suits. <3

Saturday: Intense sunlight + intense dwarf hamster exercising on her VERY noisy wheel woke me up at 8:30 and I was unable to go back to sleep. I relaxed the morning away and then went out to Burlington to do some long overdue practical-clothes shopping for myself. I spent under $200 and came home with two sweaters, two sweater dresses, some nice 'n thick tights, something special, and a necklace to wear with my wedding dress. Win! That night I went home and modeled these things for Nate, ate some gnocchi, and then we went to Underworld. I danced heaps and it was loads of fun.

Sunday: I met up with my friend Carrie... she is one of two people that I keep in regular contact with from high school. I love her oodles, but haven't seen her since 2006. We went to the Aquarium, ate at Faneuil Hall (yummmy Thai!), and then walked around the Common and Gardens before heading back to our other friend's apartment. It was so, so great to see them and to spend some real quality time together. Hopefully we all get together again sooner rather than later. <33

I really, really love these people. <3

Here comes the rain again

BLEAH. I'm sick - not a painful, stuck in bed, unable to move sick, but more a miserable, tired, runny nose, nauseous, fever sick. Ash is too, but zenhack is not. Ash and I both slept >12 hours last night. The doctor says it's not swine flu. We've cancelled all appts today and tomorrow anyway.

He is, however, his father's child. He took my hand, put it on his head, and started to move it - demanding head scratching.

I go take shower now.

FaerieCon Recap!

FaerieCon was definitely a blast this weekend! The only downer for me was the huge breaks between the second and third bands each night - I would very much have liked to see both bands' full sets, but ended up going to bed about halfway through each. Apparently, I got old when I wasn't looking! Hrmph!

But in any case, the eye candy wandering around was absolutely wonderful. I took about a jillion pictures. :-) If anyone's interested in my own outfit (and my friend Vicky's), pics and details are behind the cut! )

Vita question: Outdated references?

Hello, all!

First of all, I am jazzed to be part of this community. I have been learning so much from everyone these past few days about GTA rights and the complicated situation behind unionization.

My situation is this: I got my MA two years ago (Spring 2008), where two professors agreed to be my references for Ph.D. programs, but I waited until Fall 2008 (after graduating) to apply. Unfortunately, that round of apps was a bust, and I decided to stay as a part-timer at a hometown college through the 2009-2010 academic year.

I've kept their letters on InterFolio, but my question is this: are they outdated as references? Should I be looking more toward my writing program administrator and department chair for newer references? N.B.: I am switching concentrations from literature (my MA is in Renaissance) to Rhet/Comp pedagogy for the Ph.D. apps.

Thanks for all feedback!

'End of our world' Graeco-Roman literature?

This is not associated to anything I am studying, just one of the curious things I'm wondering about. This is not related to English; I'm asking just in case some of you might know something.

I read in Zondervan's A History of Christianity that at the rise of Christianity as a replacement of Roman culture, the Romans felt a sense that the world was old and at the end of its age, as the old gods were discarded for a newer one -- in other words, they had this sense that they were watching the end of their civilization.

Was there any art or literature produced during this period? Not Christian ones; that I'm fairly familiar with.

Edwardian boning

hello everyone, me again and yet again it's about edwardians. I'm finally working on a real edwardian corset, not mocking up and it's nearly finished: I'm putting the boning in. And that's where I ran into problems. I know edwardians are boned parallel to the busk and in pairs, and that's exactly what I did: I lay the fabric flat, and measured the same amount from the busk at different heights, made a mark, and then pinned the boning tape in. So that should be parallel, right? The trouble is, instead of reducing wrinkles, the corset looks A LOT more wrinkly with the boning IN, which is very annoying! It does straighten out into just acceptable wrinkly-ness when you lace it on and there's pressure on it, but really, I had my hopes up for something that would look a little more neat...So, does anyone know what went wrong? Could it be the bust/hip-waist spring? Or do you know what I can do about it?

I want to get the boning done this morning so i'm not sure whether I'll have time to take your comments into account, however if I'll settle with the wrinkly thing (it's underwear, so no real drama if it doesn't look as pretty as I wanted it to be) I at least want to know what I have done wrong. :S

thanks a lot already :)

For All Children To Whom We Entrust The Future

1

It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.  No.  Wrong word, Jonas thought.  Frightened meant that deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen.  Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community twice.  He had seen it both times.  Squinting toward the sky, he had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at its high speed, go past, and a second later heard the blast of sound that followed.  Then one more time, a moment later, from the opposite direction, the same plane.

At first, he had been only fascinated.  He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community.  Occasionally, when supplies were delivered by cargo planes to the landing field across the river, the children rode their bicycles to the riverbank and watched, intrigued, the unloading and then the takeoff directed to the west, always away from the community.

But the aircraft a year ago had been different.  It was not a squat, fat-bellied cargo plane but a needle-nosed single-pilot jet.  Jonas, looking around anxiously, had seen others - adults as well as children - stop what they were doing and wait, confused, for an explanation of the frightening event.  Then all of the citizens had been ordered to go into the nearest building and stay there.  IMMEDIATELY, the rasping voice through the speakers had said.  LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE.

Instantly, obediently, Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family's dwelling.  He had run indoors and stayed there, alone.  His parents were both at work, and his little sister, Lily, was at the Childcare Center where she spent her after-school hours.

Looking through the front window, he had seen no people: none of the busy afternoon crew of Street Cleaners, Landscape Workers, and Food Delivery people who usually populated the community at that time of day.  He saw only the abandoned bikes here and there on their sides; an upturned wheel on one was still revolving slowly.

He had been frightened then.  The sense of his own community silent, waiting, had made his stomach churn.  He had trembled.

But it had been nothing.  Within minutes the speakers had crackled again, and the voice, reassuring now and less urgent, had explained that a Pilot-in-Training had misread his navigational instructions and made a wrong turn.  Desperately the Pilot had been trying to make his way back before his error was noticed. )

desserts-cupcakes -allergies-gluten/wheat

I attend a game every week with my friends and have ALWAYS brought goodies for everybody (totaling six people). I guess part of my love for it is the smug feeling of victory when they eat it and say it's too good, it couldn't possibly be vegan (HA!).

I've been thrown a curve-ball, though. One of the girls found out she's allergic to gluten. While I make something twice a year for my gluten intolerant aunt, I'm definitely not prepared for an every week goodie.

Do any of you have recipes for group treats that you've liked? Also, are there any flour mixtures that you use for a cupcake base - or is it a case-by-case basis? The more creative, the better! Thank you all, in advance.

Sci=Fi run down post

Quick post about some Sci-Fi I've enjoyed:

- V: ABC's rebirth of this series. So far I've enjoyed it. I think ABC could have done better with a 2 hour launch rather than a 1 hour launch. Morena Baccarin was AWESOME as the V Leader, but Alan Tyduk's once off appearance was sad. THey could have pushed that one character sooo much farther. The only thing I do not like is the fact that some political minded types have affixed a rather Anti-Obama feel to the show. Yeah it does have some parallels, and I feel the constant harping about Peace, Change, and Universal Health Care, may have been overdone by the writers but I can see why. Doing a show about Nazi Space Lizards from the 80's may have been recieved as cliche'd. V's intention was to unsettle its viewers/readers. I may not like how they are doing it but they got the spirit of it right.

- BSG: The Plan: It was okay. It cast a lot of light on the personalities of the other Cylons we didn't get too much development on. The 5's and 4's in particular. And a lot of seeing 1's. Seriously. I had a few gripes with it. One being the pointless nudity. Granted there was penis to go with boobage, however it made no sense in the overall point of the program. They could have gone into more character development with the other characters as well but I guess there's only so much you could do in 2 hours. Good alternate perspective from the cylon side but really why all the T&P?

- Doll House: Not see this week's episode but this season is shaping up very very well. Fox is nerfing some of the eps from what I've heard, but when haven't they tried to screw over Whedon.

- Sanctuary: I started watching this one about a 157 year old immortal scientist that has created a place for monsters to be stored and kept safe from the outside world. Its a SyFy series so its a bit hit or miss on the special effects and they WAY overuse the greenscreen, but its got a good premise and is fun to watch. Making Tesla an electricity using vampire was a bit too silly however.

- Doctor Who: Not on yet, but only days away now. *bounce bounce*
